Dawson was known for his candid nature, enthusiasm, and skill as a host. He also was notable in that he didn’t always have a saccharine sheen on his persona, like many other hosts. Instead, with Dawson, you got a much more raw and real person hosting. He was certainly happy and pleasant, but he wasn’t afraid to give a contestant get a ribbing if he felt they deserved it. His sarcasm and wit made him stand out as a host. They are also what made him great on Match Game. But things weren’t always rosy for the talented performer.
