Clark Gable had shown interest in serving as soon as America became involved in World War II. Clark was married to actress Carole Lombard at the time, and he asked her to send a telegram to President Theodore Roosevelt asking what the president thought Clark should do to aid in America’s war effort. Believing that the risk of losing Clark in combat wouldn’t be worth the potential recruits that the attention of him joining the United States Army would drum up, President Roosevelt advised Clark against it.

Clark was fine with the president's orders and decided to exercise his patriotism in other ways. However, this all changed after the tragic death of his wife, Carole, in early 1942. After Carole’s tragic death in a plane crash, while coming home from a tour selling war bonds, Clark fell into a period of depressive drinking for several months. When he pulled himself together, he decided to defy President Roosevelt’s orders and enlist in the United States Army.

When President Roosevelt caught wind that Clark had defied his orders, he created a special assignment to keep the actor out of harm’s way. That assignment was to create the pro-war propaganda film Combat America. However, Clark ended up seeing active combat anyways, saying that he needed hands-on experience.
