Did you know that Body and Soul actress Hazel Brooks started her career as a model at the age of 17, and married a man over twice her age before she was 20? Hazel Brooks was born in South Africa, but her mother moved her to America when she was only two. With her striking good looks, Hazel found success as a model at the age of only 17. Soon after becoming a model, Hazel was swept up by MGM to become the studio’s next big star. However, MGM had a hard time figuring out what to do with her.

One of the roles MGM gave Hazel Brooks was a bit part in the film Ziegfeld Follies, which featured Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. A variety of other bit parts followed, but it seemed that Hazel was going to be doomed to appear in the background. She married the head of MGM’s art department and talked the studio into releasing her out of her contract so she could pursue work elsewhere.
Before finding other work, Hazel lived for a period of time as a housewife with her husband Cedric Gibbons. She soon decided the life of a housewife wasn’t for her and made a second bid for Hollywood stardom. She was given a contract with burgeoning independent production company The Enterprise Studios, and they went about attempting to make Hazel its preeminent star. She made her debut with the studio in the classic 1947 boxing film Body and Soul, though few other roles followed. By the mid-1950s, Hazel had retired. Her first husband passed away in 1960, and Hazel remarried a decade later. Hazel spent her remaining years working as a photographer.
