Piper was born in Detroit during the early 1930s. Despite some anxiety issues, Piper’s childhood was relatively normal until the age of six, when she and her sister were involuntarily confined to a children’s sanitarium by their parents without any explanation. Several years later, those very same parents would return and bring the two girls home as if nothing had ever happened. However, the sanitarium stay left an imprint on young Piper, and it surprisingly wasn’t an entirely negative one! According to Piper, her forced stay at this sanitarium led to her becoming the star she is today.

While Piper claims that the other children at the sanitarium initially bullied her and her sister for their freckles and red hair, they were eventually able to find peace. One thing that helped the girls cope during their sanitarium stay was being forced to learn and perform the piano. This allowed Piper to overcome her anxiety issues and realize that she had a true love for performing. Of course, this would then lead to the young girl becoming a star at a fairly early age.

Piper signed with Universal Pictures at the age of 17 and soon became a Hollywood star. After becoming disenchanted with the Hollywood studio system, she fled to the stage and returned to the big screen in the 1970s as a more respected dramatic actress. Through all of it, Piper has had her traumatic childhood to thank for her success in the entertainment industry.
