One thing that Paula Prentiss and Richard Benjamin have had to suffer through throughout their six-decade marriage has been the attempted murder of Richard and their adult son at the behest of Paula's younger sister, Ann. After Paula's own career began in Hollywood, her younger sister Ann attempted to follow in her footsteps to middling success. By the late 1990s, Ann had fallen off the radar.
In addition to Richard and her nephew, named Ross, Ann Prentiss also arranged for the murder of her own father. Ann arranged for these murders behind bars, and she was behind bars for assaulting her father while handling a firearm. It remains uncertain why Ann wanted her father, or Richard and her nephew, dead. Ann was charged for these crimes and sentenced to 19 years, though she died in jail at the age of 70 after serving only 12 of them.
Several decades before this incident involving Ann, Paula Prentiss had a mental breakdown on the set of What’s New Pussycat? The breakdown resulted in the actress attempting suicide and being held in a psychiatric hospital for nine months. Though these times were rough on her marriage, her and Richard persevered.
