Some of the many figures that have been considered the Fifth Beatles over time include Stuart Sutcliffe, Pete Best, Brian Epstein, and George Martin. Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best were founding members of the group, though they were no longer members by the time the Beatles found their breakout success. Pete was the band’s original bassist before passing away from a brain hemorrhage in 1961. He is credited with introducing the iconic mop-top hairdo to the band. Pete Best was the Beatles’ original drummer, though he was fired in 1962.

Brian Epstein became the Beatles’ manager in 1961, and he served in that role until his death in 1967. Brian let the Beatles do things their way, and the Beatles loved him for it. Without Brian, the Beatles likely wouldn’t have achieved the prominence they did. However, according to Paul McCartney, it’s George Martin who made the most significant contributions to the Beatles besides the band’s four core members. If Paul McCartney is right, then it was producer George Martin who was the true Fifth Beatle.

George Martin produced the majority of the Beatles’ output, and he even provided most of the songs with their iconic orchestral arrangements. However, George Martin himself considered Brian Epstein to be the Fifth Beatle. It’s no wonder the truth about who the real Fifth Beatle remains such a mystery!
