He never wanted for anything as a child, except perhaps a bit more affection from his workaholic parents. They were grooming him to be a doctor and didn’t believe in his dreams until they saw him perform. Humphrey began his career on stage. A single line got him a contract. He got small roles in gangster films that led to parts in bigger projects. He always told the studio and the world what he thought about the projects he worked on.
Disputes led him to found his own production company, Santana Productions. It was named after his beloved yacht. He didn’t produce his best work under that banner and had to sell it in the end, but he never stopped working. Humphrey had several pastimes when he wasn’t acting. He loved to sail and was an expert chess player. He drank with and helped found the Rat Pack. There were also plenty of women in his life.
His final marriage to Lauren Bacall was the most famous. They had a relationship marred by affairs but full of love until the end. His heavy drinking and smoking led to his death from esophageal cancer. Like many artists, a new interest in his work arose after he was gone. He’s now considered one of the best actors of all time. He was also part of many of the world’s favorite films, and his likeness has been spoofed and referenced countless times.
