When Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were cast in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film adaptation of Romeo & Juliet to play its titular characters, they were teenagers. Olivia was 15, while Leonard was 16. According to the performers, who are still around today, they were promised before signing onto the film that it would contain no nudity. This came in spite of the fact that there was a nude scene written into the script in the form of a bedroom scene. Franco assured the two teenagers that the nude scene would be filmed using skin-colored garments to create the illusion of nudity.
Olivia and Leonard were signed on, and much of the picture was already filmed by the time Franco announced that he had apparently changed his mind about the nude scene.
