Do you have a set of criteria you use to decide whether or not to see a movie? One of the most popular is the Bechdel Test. This test was invented in 1985 and has a few simple but specific requirements. Are there at least 2 female characters with names who talk about anything other than a man?

Classic Disney movies may not be hailed for their female representation, but several of them pass the Bechdel Test. Cinderella talks about more than Prince Charming with her evil family. Sleeping Beauty and her fairy protectors have plenty of conversations. Wendy from Peter Pan finds female friends in Neverland.
The Wizard of Oz, Cabaret, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are examples of classic musicals that pass the Bechdel Test. Hitchcock has a negative reputation with women but made at least 2 films that pass; Rear Window and The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Even silent films can pass the test if you count interludes and text as “speech.” The New York Hat focuses on a young woman who wants to buy a beautiful hat. She’s not focused on men, and neither are the women around her who she does “talk” to.

The Bechdel Test isn’t a measure of quality or a foolproof guide to representation. Gone with the Wind passes it despite being problematic in its depiction of race relations.

One special film follows what could almost be considered an “anti-Bechdel test.” Whatever Happened to Baby Jane’s characters meaningful characters are all women who almost always talk about more than men. Most of its male characters don’t have names or talk about anything other than women.
