Ambiguous endings aren’t a favorite of theirs. They would rather not see the origami unicorn in Blade Runner or the friends in Shawshank Redemption “hopefully” reunite. Once they know what they’re seeing, they can likely have an opinion about it. Audiences may want a death to be more gruesome, like the one for Alex in Fatal Attraction. They may also want characters to remain unscathed like in Little Shop of Horrors.
A scene that’s supposed to be serious can accidentally seem hilarious to them. That’s true of the original ending of Sunset Boulevard or, for UK audiences, the peaceful night for Elizabeth and Darcy after their wedding night. Romances can get sparked or cut thanks to test audiences. Pretty in Pink’s couple would have been entirely different. My Best Friend’s Wedding would have gotten its leads together instead of keeping them apart.
Even the most successful films of all time have trouble with their test audiences. Titanic had to cut out a fight scene and ending that most found superfluous. Children are the most difficult test audience to please, but they can have a major impact. Part of Your World is one of the most popular Disney songs of all time, but a second screening kept it in.
Test screenings aren’t the only way for movie plotlines to get out to the public. Leaked scenes can make viewers so angry that they take action to change them. When fans found out about the sacrifice in Star Trek II, they wrote piles of petitions to make it less final.
