Did you know that there have been several ideas for Dirty Jobs segments that were deemed too dark to make it onto the program, and did you know that series host Mike Rowe came up with the original idea for the show as a way to pay tribute to his grandfather? Mike Rowe’s grandfather was a carpenter, and Mike has always had a great deal of respect for physical laborers. However, when it came time for Mike to choose a profession of his own, he felt drawn to the performing arts. He performed with the Baltimore Opera for some time before eventually taking a job working in the news department at a San Francisco television station.

It was during Mike’s time at the San Francisco television station that he came up with the concept that would eventually become Dirty Jobs. The idea started out as small segments that aired on the local news station. The first segment showcased a truck driver who went around picking up dog poop in the area. Soon, Mike got the idea to start pitching the segments to other stations in hopes of getting his own full series. Many networks turned him down, including Comedy Central. However, the Discovery Channel eventually accepted his concept.
Dirty Jobs premiered as a special in 2003 before being picked up as a full series in 2005. The original show lasted until 2012 and has since been revived in various different forms. Throughout the series’ various iterations, plenty of footage has had to be excised for being too disgusting.
