Mickey Rooney was born as Joseph Yule Jr. on September 23, 1920, in New York City. By the time he died at the age of 93 on April 6, 2014, he was remembered as one of the best actors that Hollywood ever produced and a product of its Golden Age.

His first foray into the world of show business wasn’t as easy as he may have hoped. Mickey Rooney was short, standing only at 5 feet 2 inches. Yet, he still managed to become a great character actor and even a leading man. He saw the film industry go through many changes and managed to adapt whenever needed.
Mickey Rooney knew that he wanted to pursue a career in entertainment from the get-go as both his parents were entertainers. His mother was a chorus girl and a burlesque performer. His father was a vaudeville performer. In fact, when he was born his parents were in the middle of performing in a play together.
He also came of age when cinema was growing. It was rapidly becoming the preferred form of entertainment for Americans. It had glamour and movie actors soon became the most famous people in the country – and throughout the world.
Mickey Rooney wanted to become a part of this exciting world. As he became a more experienced actor, he also appeared in popular TV shows just as this medium was also growing popular. He started his career in a slew of different short films before graduating to feature films.
He became a huge star and by the time he died, he was an icon. He managed to carve his own niche in Hollywood and became both a versatile and prolific actor. He still serves as an inspiration for many aspiring actors today. Sadly, his final years weren’t ideal.
