A stunning video captured the moment a massive chunk of cliff collapsed, cutting the beach below in half.

Kent Ameneyro, 39, was on Blacks Beach near La Jolla, USA, on Friday January 20 when he spotted rocks rolling down from the clifftop.

Over the course of six minutes, dramatic footage shows huge heaps of the rock break away before sliding down on to the sand below.

Thanks to heavy recent rains in the area, it is estimated that up to 150,000 cubic yards of bluff collapsed.

The size of the collapse described as the most significant cliff failure in 40 years has cut the beach in half.

Kent said: "The sound was very loud. It sounded like thunder. To give perspective, these bluffs are between 300-350 feet high from the sand to the top of the bluffs.

"This section of the bluffs is about 250 feet wide. Large waves are crashing in the ocean behind us, while this giant wall of rock and thunder pushes toward us. Ive never seen anything like it.

"Large boulders broke off and tumbled down to the sand. The front portion of the bluffs detached and were pushed forward, lifting the sand in the foreground about 12-15 feet high."
