Richard Lee Sung was born in 1930 in El Paso, Texas but grew up in Los Angeles. He served in the US Marine Corps following his graduation from high school and received a Purple Heart for his bravery during the Korean War. Little did he know that he’d later become famous for appearing several times on a show set during this war!
He discovered his talents while working as a bartender in Los Angeles’ Chinatown district. He would entertain patrons with his banter and his jokes. He decided to try his luck at stand-up comedy. After a successful gig, he decided to pursue a career in show business.
He began seeking out roles in film and television. He joined an acting troupe and also studied Shakespeare formally. It wasn’t long until he began finding roles in feature films, TV movies, and TV shows. Some of his early roles were bit parts of which many went uncredited.
But he continued to persevere and soon managed to land bigger roles on some of the most popular TV shows. It wasn’t long before he became a sought-after actor in feature films! His acting career spanned close to 6 decades.
He also created opportunities for other Asian-American actors and actresses. He came in at a time when opportunities were opening up for Asian-American talent. With this hard work and perseverance, he paved the way for a new generation of Asian-American talent.
He was remembered as a professional who was always pleasant to work with. He was a talented actor who could appear in a range of roles that we still love to watch today!
