Did you know that multiple actors quit M*A*S*H because they felt like Alan Alda was getting too much time on the screen, or did you think that television actors couldn’t get jealous? The television series M*A*S*H was based upon the 1970 Robert Altman film of the same name. Like the film, the series featured an ensemble cast. The show ended up running for many years, over which time several members of its cast decided to call it quits before the show’s proper end.

The most notable actors that left M*A*S*H before the series came to an end include Larry Linville, McLean Stevenson, Gary Burghoff, and Wayne Rogers. Larry Linville left the show after its fifth season, believing that his character had already been developed as much as he possibly could be. That character was Major Frank Burns. Though the character wasn’t given his own farewell episode like some others were, the writers did explain that character’s absence by saying his character was put on a psychiatric hold.

McLean Stevenson portrayed the character of Lt. Colonel Henry Blake on the series, and he ended up leaving after the show’s third season because he felt that the character of Hawkeye was getting more time on the screen than his own. McLean wanted a show where he could be the star, though he sadly didn’t end up finding another successful series.

Gary Burghoff was one of the few actors that returned from the 1970 film to reprise his role on the series M*A*S*H, though he grew tired of the gig nearly a decade in. Actor Wayne Rogers was another star that quit because he didn’t want to play second fiddle to Alan Alda. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at M*A*S*H actors who quit the show early.
