Sadly, this hit performance didn’t yield a successful career, and Martha retired barely a decade later.

Martha appeared in several more features after her successful turn in The Big Sleep, but none of them proved nearly as successful as that hit 1946 film noir. Many credit Martha’s successful performance in The Big Sleep to director Howard Hawks. It seems that no other director was able to get quite as successful of a performance out of the actress over the course of her remaining career. According to Howard himself, this was because her subsequent film roles tried to paint her as a good girl, which the audience didn’t want to see. Her role in The Big Sleep remains iconic.
