Patty had a traumatic childhood. Her father was a drunk and her mother was an addict. A couple called the Rosses offered to mold her to stardom, but they were controlling and abusive.
Her first marriage helped her escape their clutches. She went with 32-year-old Harry Falk Jr., the producer of her hit show The Patty Duke Show. Her career was a success, but their marriage didn’t last.
It wasn’t the first time she engaged in an impulsive affair. She began seeing Dezi Arnez Jr. while she was already romantically tied to John Astin. His mother Lucile Ball was not pleased by the news.
The rumors didn’t end when the affair did. Patty became pregnant with her first son Sean, and she initially claimed that Dezi was the father. She later claimed it was John Astin, and Michael Tell’s relatives also suggested they were related. It took a paternity test to find out that his father was Michael Tell.
Patty’s career recovered from the scandal, but her mental health did not. She starred in a cult classic called Valley of the Dolls, and her character’s addiction and erratic behavior mirrored her own. Her Emmy acceptance speech for My Sweet Charlie only confirmed the rumors about her mental state.
Patty was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It wasn’t enough to save her marriage with John Astin, but it did get her the necessary treatment and made her a vocal mental health advocate. She even managed to find true love with Michael Pearce.
