News broke today that Loretta Lynn has passed away at 90 years old.
Loretta was a country singer-songwriter with an impressive legacy, having crafted hit songs such as the autobiographical “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and the infamous ode to birth control “The Pill”. Loretta came onto the country scene at a time when women singer-songwriters weren’t taken seriously, and she carved a name for herself with a little bit of perseverance and a little bit of controversy.
Loretta has managed to become the icon that she is due to her authentic country spirit, gifted to her as a result of numerous hardships. These hardships started when Loretta was just the poor daughter of a coal miner, singing and rocking her younger siblings to sleep. Her family was economically troubled, which resulted in Loretta marrying and having children at a very young age.
Some sources speculate that Loretta married when she was only 13 years old, to a 21-year-old husband by the name of Oliver. Loretta was so immature at the time that she didn’t even understand conception, resulting in her becoming pregnant early into the marriage. The two had numerous children. Loretta has tragically lost many of her closest loved ones and has also experienced personal tragedies including abuse from Oliver and addiction problems.
Despite all that Loretta has been through, she continued to sing and perform. Her most recent album was released in 2022 and was produced by Johnny Cash’s son, John Carter Cash. In the past few decades, Loretta has become more popular than ever due to her progressive ideals and pioneering feminism. Her many controversies have gone on to make her a legend in the eyes of new generations, and the many hardships that she has faced during her lifetime have only made her stronger.
In addition to the numerous family members Loretta has lost, she was also close friends with Patsy Cline. Patsy infamously died at age 30 in a tragic airplane accident, an event that caused Loretta a great deal of turmoil early in her life.
