Lucille wasn't anxious to get remarried after divorcing Desi due to the tumultuous and exhausting nature of their marriage. However, she couldn't help herself when she met fellow comedian Gary Morton. Gary was an underground comedian who had honed his skills in the Catskills Mountains, though he had never managed to get much farther than that famous hotbed for fledgling performers. Despite Gary’s lack of equal celebrity status, or perhaps because of it, Lucille found herself falling for him.
Gary was the one that proposed marriage, and Lucille was initially hesitant to accept. However, she eventually relented, and the two remained married until Lucille’s 1989 death several decades later. Lucille was happier with Gary than she had been with Desi, though she always held a soft spot for the man that she had created I Love Lucy with. Desi was also the father of her two children, and the former couple remained amicable for the sake of their kids.
During the early years of Lucille and Gary’s marriage, Lucille, Gary, and Desi all worked together at Desilu Productions on The Lucy Show. This was an incredibly awkward time for the three of them, and Desi eventually decided to sell his shares of the company to Lucille so that they could both move on with their lives.
