Florence Henderson and Shirley Jones competed for many parts, with Shirley beating out Florence to appear in the 1955 film adaptation of Oklahoma! Florence had played the part previously in a touring production. Shirley was offered the role of Carol Brady over a decade later but ended up turning it down. Florence was glad to step in and take her friend’s place, though she had to finish filming a movie in Scandinavia. Because of this, Florence missed the filming of the first six episodes of The Brady Bunch. Of course, Shirley went on to appear on The Partridge Family just a year after The Brady Bunch made it's debut, and both shows were hits.
While many of the actors and actresses that played her on-screen children on The Brady Bunch went on to lead turbulent personal lives, Florence Henderson always remained incredibly even-keeled up until her 2016 death.
