Before his death in 1992, Chuck Connors was an American actor and professional athlete best known for his turn in the 1958 television Western The Rifleman. However, the actor led a long and storied life besides his titular turn in that Western, with him having played both baseball and basketball professionally before making his on-screen debut.

Chuck was born in Brooklyn during the 1920s. Despite the fact that the Brooklyn Dodgers weren’t doing great during the decade, Chuck was a big fan and hoped to eventually play for the team. He practiced vehemently and was eventually given a scholarship to a preparatory school that allowed him to further continue his practice of the sport. After graduating in 1939, Chuck received several more scholarship offers.
After only two years into college, Chuck dropped out to play baseball professionally. Chuck played in the minor leagues for two years before taking a break to join the United States Army in 1942, at the cusp of America’s entrance into World War II. After his return from the war, Chuck played basketball professionally for a time before becoming an actor.
Chuck made his on-screen debut acting alongside Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn in the 1952 film Pat and Mike. Chuck had signed with MGM and starred in several more pictures for the studio before eventually being cast in The Rifleman.
