Did you know that William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy negotiated their contracts together on the set of Star Trek and that the two stars didn’t speak for years leading up to Leonard’s 2015 death? According to William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy was one of the best friends that he ever had. However, in the years leading up to the latter figure’s death, the two performers weren’t on speaking terms! It seems that the reason the two Star Trek stars fell out was a trivial matter involving a made-for-television documentary that was released in 2011. Leonard passed away in 2015, and William didn’t even make it to the funeral!

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were born mere days apart, though they didn’t meet until filming a 1964 episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. together. A year later, Leonard was cast in the pilot that would become Star Trek. The initial pilot was a failure, so creator Gene Roddenberry had to retool it. It was during this retooling period that William Shatner was added to the cast. When the show became a success, a rivalry developed between William and Leonard due to the fact that Leonard was more popular.

Though their relationship started out as a rivalry, William and Leonard would soon become the best of friends. This friendship would last beyond the filming of the original Star Trek series. In fact, it would grow over the ensuing decades as the two performers attended numerous conventions together.
