The first death that utterly destroyed Led Zeppelin was the tragic death of singer Robert Plant’s five-year-old son. Robert’s son passed away from a stomach infection in 1977. Robert came to blame his son’s death on bad karma, claiming that he was being punished for his debaucherous time in the world of rock and roll. Unsurprisingly, Robert then quit the band. However, drummer John Bonham ended up being able to talk Robert Plant back a few years later.
Though John Bonham was able to talk Robert Plant into rejoining Led Zeppelin by the end of the 1970s, the group’s second life wouldn’t last for long. John Bonham was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol, to the point where it was getting in the way of his drumming. The other members of Led Zeppelin feared that John’s worsening behavior meant that they were going to have to stop performing. Little did they know how right they were!
John Bonham passed away in 1980 from choking on his own vomit, and Led Zeppelin officially broke up shortly afterward. Besides John, the three other founding members of the band are all still alive. Even though Led Zeppelin is officially broken up, they often get together with John's son for reunion shows.
