Laraine Day was born in 1920 to a wealthy Mormon family. She was one of eight siblings, and she became interested in performing as a teenager when her family moved out to California. While attending high school in Long Beach, Laraine began performing with a troupe by the name of the Long Beach Players. It was via her work with the Long Beach Players that Laraine first caught the attention of a Hollywood executive. Laraine’s first Hollywood contract was with Samuel Goldwyn Studio, though her contract with the studio didn’t last for long. The burgeoning star ended up finding more success with RKO Pictures, though she would become a star after signing with MGM in the late 1930s.
MGM broke things off with MGM after about a decade and return to RKO Pictures at the height of her fame. This time around, the contract she signed with the studio was much more lucrative. The contract, which was only set to last for five years, dictated that she only needed to make one picture per year. For each picture, she would be allotted a sum of $100,000. In the 1950s, Laraine made a career change into television journalism and even became the host of her own television series. All the while, she continued acting. Most of the actress’s acting work, later on, occurred on the stage.
Laraine Day was a practicing Mormon throughout her whole life. This kept her from succumbing to common vices, but it didn’t prevent her from suffering through a couple of short-lived marriages.
