One of the most glaring is the different versions of the story of how Carrie and Doug Heffernan met. One says they went to school together, and another says they met on a double date at a bar. The showrunners say that viewers can decide for themselves which one is the truth. Certain details about the characters didn’t stay consistent throughout the series. Spencer had a peanut allergy in later seasons but not in the first one. Arthur could play the piano in early episodes and then couldn’t later. Carrie was even called Simone as a child and doesn’t seem to remember it, even though she should be old enough to.
Other characters disappeared entirely. Richie, a core member of Doug’s friend group, went away without so much as a goodbye when the actor who played him wanted to move to another sitcom. Doug and Carrie also had sisters who appeared in the early seasons and then never came back. Even the dog they rescued from the Sakcheys went poof. Speaking of the Sakcheys, they disappeared after getting the Heffernans involved in a scam. That seemed normal until they reappeared with an inground pool seasons later. Why wouldn’t they mention the scam, and how the Scakchies escape jail? Details that wouldn’t have fit in New York, such as palm trees and restaurants, made their way in. There were also errors where exterior shots of their house didn’t match the interior.
