Joseph Cotten got into acting during his high-school years, though it took him several years afterward to make a name for himself on the stage. After his first marriage, Joseph decided to supplement his meager thespian income by working in radio. It was during his years working in radio that Joseph met Orson Welles. The two became friends, despite the fact that Orson was around 10 years Joseph’s junior. Orson began directing Joseph in some popular plays.

In 1941, Orson Welles took the world of cinema by storm with Citizen Kane. Citizen Kane featured Joseph in a notable supporting role. The film proved that Joseph had what it took to make it on the big screen, and a number of successful roles in films followed over the course of the ensuing 1940s. The decade was capped off by the most iconic lead role of Joseph’s career, which came via another Orson Welles’ film.
