John Wayne, AKA The Duke, became an American icon starring in dozens of films made during what's known as Hollywood's Golden Age. His career really started taking off in the silent film era of the 1920s and continued to flourish through the American New Wave movement of the 1960s and '70s. Wayne would remain active in Hollywood until his death in 1979 at the age of 72.
Wayne appeared in whopping 179 movies and television shows. Throughout his career, he was one of the top box-office draws and frequently appeared alongside other influential Hollywood stars of this important era in American cinema.
Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa, in 1907, He would spend most of his childhood and teen years in Southern California. After losing out on a football scholarship to the University of Southern California following a bodysurfing accident, John started working for the Fox Film Corporation. At first, he was only given minor roles, but he got his first big break when he landed the leading role in the 1930s The Big Trail.
John Wayne became a household name after he appeared in John Ford's 1939 film Stagecoach. He would go on to appear in dozens of Western and Action films, including Tru Grit, Rio Bravo, The Longest Day, and The Shootist.
Wayne married three times throughout his life and had a total of 7 children.
After his death, Wayne's grave would remain unmarked for decades, raising quite a few eyebrows. In 2019, a resurfaced 1971 interview in which Wayne made several racist remarks further called into question his legacy. Unable to defend himself, Wayne's children have been fighting his battles for him in the decades since his passing.
