But one aspect that we don’t discuss often is JFK’s doctor. It’s barely mentioned today that JFK had several health problems throughout his childhood and his career. Naturally, he needed a great doctor by his side.
JFK’s doctor was Dr. Max Jacobson who would later be dubbed “Dr. Feelgood.” The doctor himself had a mysterious life, having grown up in the German Empire – though much is not known about his early life and career.
But we do know that JFK’s doctor fled the Nazis and found freedom in America. He set up a medical practice in Manhattan and somehow became one of the most popular doctors for some of America’s biggest celebrities.
Dr. Jacobson was the epitome of the ideal immigrant. He came to America in less-than-ideal circumstances yet managed to rise to the top of his profession and treat the most elite members of American society.
However, becoming JFK was arguably the pinnacle of his career. He felt it was a great honor to be able to treat the American President – especially during the height of the Cold War.
Yet, it was also this time in his career when his reputation came under question. His behavior became erratic and the public took notice. It wasn’t long until he came under suspicion of the U.S. Government and he’d soon be banned from visiting the White House!
So how did JFK’s doctor become such a suspicious character? And what gave him the unusual nickname, “Dr. Feelgood?” And how did the public eventually find out about the strange relationship between the President and his Doctor?
