Fredo Corleone is likely one of the greatest characters created in cinema history. The popularity of the character comes from the excellent performance by John Cazale.

Little is known about John Cazale’s life and career. But without a doubt, he was one of the greatest actors that America has ever produced. His short filmography includes The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter.

John Cazale grew up in Massachusetts and began studying acting during his teenage years. He began his acting career in theater, both in Broadway and Off-Broadway plays. It was during his theater years that he befriended Al Pacino and the two of them would work together in cinema many years later.

His leap into cinema was a struggle. He made a short film and landed a small role in a popular TV show in the 1960s. But neither of these managed to launch him to stardom. He was able to land the role of Fredo Corleone in The Godfather, upon the insistence of Al Pacino, who was also a newcomer of the time.

History was made and John Cazale would be offered great roles in what would become great films. Sadly, John Cazale didn’t live to see his final film and Meryl Streep, his former fiancée, has told all about his life and career.

John Cazale’s life was tragically cut short. But in his short life, he acted in 5 of the greatest films of all time and created some of the most iconic characters in film history! To this day, he serves as an inspiration for many aspiring actors.
