Joanne Woodward was born in Thomasville, Georgia in 1930. While she didn’t come from a showbiz family, her mother did name her after actress Joan Crawford. Perhaps this was fate that Joanne was also due to become a huge movie star. After attending a premiere of Gone With The Wind as a child she decided that she should pursue a career in film. She studied acting during her teenage years and at university. She would eventually join The Actors Studio and would even study under Sanford Meisner.
Her career got off to a slow start in the early 1950s when she landed a few bit parts in TV shows. But her big break came when she took on one of the most challenging roles for any actress in a 1957 film called The Three Faces of Eve. History was made and she never looked back after that. She’s still remembered today as one of the greatest actresses Hollywood has ever produced. She’s also known for her marriage to Paul Newman with whom she acted with several times.
