Joan had appeared on The Tonight Show once previously back when Jack Paar had been the show's host. Joan’s chemistry with Johnny Carson did much for her success, and Joan quickly became a sensation after her second appearance on the show. Joan's second appearance, and first alongside Johnny, occurred in 1965. For the next two decades, Joan worked on the series in various capacities, both as a writer and as a guest host when Johnny was on vacation.
Joan became the main person that NBC turned to when they needed to fill Johnny's spot, so she came to consider herself a prime candidate for the beloved host's permanent replacement once he would eventually retire from his post. Sadly, NBC didn't see things the same way. When Joan realized NBC didn't consider her a viable permanent replacement, she took a deal with the burgeoning Fox Broadcasting Company, which was looking for content to fill their new networks. Joan began hosting her own late-night program, and Johnny Carson was infuriated.
Joan's late-night program didn't last very long, but the feud between her and Johnny Carson did. Joan and Johnny's feud persisted until the latter's death in 2005, and Joan continued disparaging the late comedic legend until her own death in 2014.
