Jimmy is best known for portraying George Bailey in the Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life. He played similar roles in films such as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, but he proved his range throughout his career. The lovable everyman went against type in several westerns and Hitchcock thrillers.
Even the most devoted fans don’t know everything about his life. They may not know he was born an ordinary boy in Indiana, Pennsylvania. They may not have heard of his accomplishments as a pilot in WWII. They may also not know how he struggled to find true love.
Jimmy was a shy boy who didn’t have the confidence to go up to women. He acted alongside many beautiful Hollywood starlets, including Marlen Dietrich, Ginger Rodges, and Gloria Mcleane. None of their relationships materialized into anything long-lasting.
It wasn’t until Jimmy met Gloria McLean that he was ready to settle down. They had the chemistry and matching morals he’d always wanted and made a happy family together.
Aging took its toll on the star, and he began to retire after his wife died. He survived skin cancer but had heart problems. They made it too difficult for his body to survive a dangerous blood clot.
Jimmy Stewart died of a heart attack caused by a pulmonary embolism. He was in pain in his final years. In his final moments, he could only think of how happy he was to be able to soon see his wife again.
