According to Jeremy Miller himself, his battle with alcoholism started when he was very young. As a child, Jeremy’s grandparents would throw extravagant parties, after which Jeremy would sneak around and drink all the leftover cups of alcohol. This first happened when the boy was only four years old. At the age of nine, Jeremy would be cast on Growing Pains in the role of Ben Seaver. This would pave the way for the child performer to have more experiences with alcohol. Jeremy claims that the first time he ever got completely wasted came when he was only 12 years old.
By the time that Growing Pains came to an end, Jeremy Miller was nearly an adult. However, his transition into adulthood was impeded by the fact that he was now a full-blown alcoholic.
