It was inspired by David Chase’s real life and named after his friend group. Actor Tony Sirico also added his own experience with the mob to the story. It was originally pitched as a film but then reworked into a series. Fox passed on it, but HBO decided it would be perfect for their grittier network.
A combination of real location and sound stages, multiple takes of the same scenes, and a great opening theme gave The Sopranos strong legs to stand on. It also had the perfect cast. Most of them had also worked on 1990s Goodfellas. This taught them how to carry a crime story.
James Gandolfini played the lead. He was the one who convinced David to keep Tony Soprano gritty and surly. He was also a method actor who used tricks to get into that headspace. They included putting pebbles in his shoes and staying up all night. He was also guaranteed to keep the show going no matter what. He used his own money earned from being the lead actor to satisfy his costars during a salary dispute.
The rest of the cast was also willing to do their part. Steve Schiprila had to wear a fat suit for several seasons to keep jokes about his character’s weight relevant. Drea De Matteo had to sit for hours to get the right hair and makeup. Nancy Marchand worked on the show until the end of her life, even though her character was meant to die in the first season.
