At the time of his death in 1991, 83-year-old Fred MacMurray was best known to the public for his decade-plus tenure playing the character of Steven Douglas on the classic ABC sitcom My Three Sons. However, if Fred had it his way, he would’ve been better remembered for his darker and more mature performance in the 1944 film noir Double Indemnity. Two decades prior to the premiere of My Three Sons in 1960, Fred had first shown up in Hollywood with a dream of being a serious dramatic actor. The star achieved this goal, though the family-friendly roles that he would be pigeonholed into later on would obscure his early work.
Fred’s first acting experiences were on Broadway, where his most notable work was with Bob Hope in the 1933 production Roberta. It was Fred’s role in this production that got him signed with Paramount Pictures, and he went on to make his Hollywood debut in 1935. By the early 1940s, Fred was the highest-paid actor in all of Hollywood. Around this time, he went on to perform his role in Double Indemnity.
