For better or worse, Errol Flynn defined what it meant to be a man for millions of lads in the 1930s and 1940s. He led a wild life full of drinking, partying, swashbuckling (on film and somewhat in real life), and womanizing. While definitely not the best role model, there’s no doubt Flynn achieved a level of fame few actors of his day reached. After all, we still know his name today. He’s probably most famous for his early films, where he played the suave hero, 1930s movies like Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood. (Those tights!)

Not so many people know that Errol Flynn was actually born in Tasmania. His mother was a housewife, and his father was an accomplished marine biologist. Despite being sent to the best schools in Australia and Europe, Flynn was a high school dropout. He even ran with a notorious razor gang in Sydney. After flunking school, he headed over to New Guinea, where he worked various jobs for the Australian colonial government–everything from a boat caption to a gold prospector.
In the 1940s, Errol Flynn headed back to England. He worked on stage and screen before getting signed by Warner Brothers and making his debut in Hollywood. In America, Flynn would become notorious for his womanizing ways, even getting tried and acquitted for statutory rape in the late 1940s. He married three times–his second wife was a 17-year-old he met at the courthouse during his trial. In the 1950s, Flynn fell out of favor with the public and the movie studios. He retired to his yacht, spending his time sailing the Mediterranean with his third wife, new baby daughter, and people like Rita Hayworth and King Farouk of Egypt.
