If you’ve watched a Humphrey Bogart movie, then you’ve probably seen him smoking a cigarette. Bogart smoked them so often, both in real life and on screen, that a cigarette basically became a permanent prop for him. And they became something people always associated with him.

Of course, if his smoking had been just during a few takes for each scene of a movie, and he didn’t partake much beyond that, he might have managed to live a longer and more healthy life. But sadly, Humphrey smoked two packs a day for most of his life. It started even back in prep school, where he was eventually expelled for smoking and drinking. Bogart’s characters benefitted from his “cool” smoking habit, and he leaned into this persona for nearly every role he played. But it was his off set lifestyle, which included a lot of smoking, a lot of drinking, and a lot of sex, that ultimately sent his health spiraling as soon as he hit his 50s.
Bogart developed cancer of the esophagus, as well as cancer in his throat and voice box. And while it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what causes specific cancer, those particular cancers are heavily linked with smoking and drinking. And perhaps even HPV, which you can get from having a lot of sex with many partners. So it’s very likely that Bogart’s choices throughout his life led to getting cancer, and succumbing quite quickly to it. At the end of the day, it’s such a shame that we lost this legend so early on. One wonders if Humphrey Bogart would have changed up his lifestyle early on, if he’d known what was to come. But then, he didn’t even stop smoking cigarettes after his cancer diagnosis as he was withering away. So perhaps he would have lived exactly the same.
