The Odd Couple began life as a successful play and then a movie. Its universal message seemed like the perfect format for a comforting Friday-night sitcom, and it was.
Not everyone believed the show could be successful. The original play’s creator didn’t want his name attached to it until he realized its potential years later. Poor ratings meant that it had to fight against cancellation after the end of every season.
The show went through several changes. There were several options for essential story beats, such as the ending where Felix gets remarried and the explanation for how the main characters met in the opening narration.
One of the most noticeable changes was the removal of the laugh track and 1-camera format in the first season. The move to a 3-camera format and live studio audience was a change that the entire team pushed for, and it made the show feel more authentic.
Perfect casting was the most important ingredient in the recipe for the show’s success. The leads were almost played by a number of popular actors, but they didn’t have the necessary connection. John Klugman and Tony Randall were the right choices. They inspired the character’s quirks and developed a tight bond that allowed them to display impressive chemistry on set.
The Odd Couple remains a staple of TV sitcoms that affected every entry in the genre that followed it. Fans still send letters to Oscar and Felix at their New York apartment.
