The show captured the restless Jac Carowak energy of the ’60s. It followed two friends traveling in their Chevy Corvette. You never knew where they’d end up, but you were always interested to find out. Martin Miller played the lead, Tod Stiles. He was also famous for his work on the show Adam-12. He was a prolific actor in television and film until he died of heart failure.

George Maharis played his best friend Buz. He stayed on for three seasons before complaining of hepatitis. He kept working as an actor, singer, and painter until the disease took his life. Glen Corbett filled the secondary lead role after George left. His performance as Linc Case didn’t fill the hole, and it was canceled soon after. That didn’t end his career, and he went on to get several minor roles in film and TV before dying of lung cancer. Route 66 was also known for its guest stars. They were almost as instrumental in bringing in viewers as the main cast was.
Boris Karlove and Lon Chaney Jr. showed up in their full Universal Classic Monsters garb. Star Trek stars such as William Shatner and DeForest Kelley also appeared. Michael Conrad got to try out being a policeman before starring in Hill Street Blues. Alan Alda was a surgeon on an episode before he became Hawkeye on M*A*S*H.
