The Rifleman has deservedly gone down in history as being one of the most influential and groundbreaking television Western series of all time. The program starred Chuck Connors as a rancher named Lucas McCain and Johnny Crawford as his beloved son Mark McCain. The series was set in the fictional frontier town of North Fork, New Mexico Territory in the late 19th century.
The Rifleman aired in black in white on ABC, premiering on September 30, 1958, and running until April 8, 1963. 168 episodes were made by the production company, Four Star Television.
The show's title was a reference to McCain's preferred firearm, his Winchester Model 1892 rifle. Seeing as how the show was set in the 1880s, this gun had not yet been produced and was thus was an anachronism. But regardless of the historical accuracy of the weapon, it was one super cool boomstick!
The Rifleman had an incredible cast. It's been more than half a century since the series ended. So, not surprisingly, the majority of the cast are no longer with us.
