After a few small roles during the late 1930s, Veronica received two big breakout roles in 1941 with her turns in the films I Wanted Wings and Sullivan’s Travels. Following her appearances in these films, the actress became one of the biggest stars of the following years. However, some personal and career mishaps over the course of the decade would ensure that her celebrity status didn’t last into the 1950s.

Veronica’s last big hit was 1946’s The Blue Dahlia, which she appeared in alongside Alan Ladd. The film is considered one of the actress’s biggest hits, but it sadly marked the end of her Hollywood career. By the 1950s, Veronica Lake was nowhere near the star that she had been during the early 1940s. Her career would continue to suffer into the 1960s.

Part of the reason that Veronica failed to find sustained success in her career was that she was apparently difficult to work with. The actress also had troubles in her personal life, and these affected her work. She passed away in 1973 to little fanfare, though is recognized today as a star.
