Caitlyn Jenner was famous as an athlete and member of the Kardashian family, shocking the world by coming out as transgender. Jazz Jennings made a reality show out of her experience called I Am Jazz.
Many trans celebrities were the first to accomplish important feats. Michaela Jae Rodrigues was the first to win an Emmy for Oustanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and a Gold Globe for Best Actress. Candis Cayne was the first actress to play an openly transgender character on primetime TV. Others have worked to make the world more inclusive. Chris Mosier helped changed the International Olympic COmmitte’s policies. Asia Kate Dillon worked to get gender-neutral categories into awards shows.
Some work behind the camera instead of in front of it. The Wachowski Sisters are both trans and founded major franchises such as the Matrix. Coming out as trans isn’t easy, and it can take years. Billy Tipton’s family and friends didn’t even know about his status as a transgender man until his death. A few of these transgender celebrities have been honored with documentaries about their life. Bambi chronicles the struggles of Algerian showgirl Marie-Pierre Pulvot, and she even got to star in it. Jamie Clayton got to portray Christine Jorgensen.
