Did you know that Oliver Hardy and Stan Laurel barely knew each other when they formed the popular comedic duo of Laurel and Hardy, but that they became such good friends by the end that Stan never performed again after Oliver’s death? Before forming the duo of Laurel and Hardy, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy came from very different walks of life. Stan Laurel was born in England and grew up in a family that had a background in theater. This caused Stan to develop an interest in theater himself, though he eventually turned to vaudeville. As a vaudeville performer, Stan came to the United States and decided he wanted to stay.

Oliver Hardy was born in the United States, and his family had no background in entertainment whatsoever. During his young adulthood, Oliver decided to attend school to become a lawyer. However, he eventually changed his mind and decided to open up a movie theater instead. Oliver’s interest in the cinema eventually led him to want to become a movie star himself. Eventually, both Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy found their way to producer Hal Roach, who paired them up as the iconic comedic duo.

Laurel and Hardy’s first features were released in the 1920s, and they entered into the 1930s major stars. Their most successful period was their time with Hal Roach, which ended in 1941. After breaking off their relationship with Hal, the pair moved to 20th Century Fox. By the 1950s, their celebrity status had decreased somewhat, and they had to tour Europe to pay the bills. Though Stan and Oliver barely knew each other when Laurel and Hardy became a famous duo, they became great friends while working together.
