Did you know that original Supergirl actress Helen Slater is still around and that she played the character of Superman’s biological mom on Smallville? In 1984, Helen Slater became the first actress to portray the character of Supergirl on the big screen. This opportunity came via the blockbuster film of the same name, which was a spin-off of the main Superman series starring Christopher Reeve in the titular role. Sadly, Supergirl didn’t prove as successful as its parent film, though the film retains cult status today for its campiness. No sequel was ever made, but Helen continues to act to this day. In fact, one of Helen’s recent roles saw her play the character of Supergirl’s mother on the CW series.

After graduating from high school, Helen Slater told her parents that she wanted to take a year off before college and see if she could get acting work. Soon after, she received an audition to portray the role of Supergirl in the then-upcoming film of the same name! In order to impress executives, Helen showed up to the audition in character. Her mother helped her sew a cape, and the cape helped her stand out and secure the role. Though Helen claims that she was mildly embarrassed, she ended up getting the part.
Sadly, critics and audiences didn’t receive 1984’s Supergirl very well. Today, Helen Slater’s portrayal of the titular character has been overshadowed by Melissa Benoist’s performance on the 2015 CW series of the same name. Thankfully, that series managed to find room for Helen by hiring her on to play the role of Supergirl’s adopted Earth mother. Today, Helen is still acting when she can, and she also releases music independently. Though she is just as beautiful as she was during the 1980s, she’s much more mature.
