Groucho rose to fame in the 1920s and 1930s alongside his brothers Harpo, Chico, Zeppo, and later, Gummo. The Marx Brothers became known for their vaudeville performances, which eventually led to a successful transition to Broadway and then to Hollywood. Groucho starred in classic films such as "Duck Soup," "A Night at the Opera," and "Animal Crackers," showcasing his quick one-liners and comedic timing.
As Groucho aged, his career shifted towards radio and television. He hosted the immensely popular quiz show "You Bet Your Life" from 1947 to 1961, where he entertained audiences with his sharp humor and engaging banter with contestants. He also made memorable guest appearances on various television shows, including "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson.
However, during Groucho's final years, rumors of elder abuse emerged. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Groucho's personal life was marred by legal battles and family disputes. His companion, Erin Fleming, who was significantly younger than him, was accused of exerting undue influence over him, isolating him from family and friends, and mishandling his finances. Groucho's children, particularly his son Arthur Marx, became concerned about his well-being and filed lawsuits to protect his interests.
