Harry Belafonte was born in Manhattan, New York, in 1927 to Jamaican immigrant parents. He joined the United States Navy during World War II and upon his discharge decided to start a career as a musician and singer. He later also had a short but rather significant acting career.
Harry Belafonte's music career flourished in the 1950s and 1960s. He is renowned for his rich baritone voice and his chart-topping hits, including "Day-O" "Jump in the Line," and "Matilda." He collaborated with renowned musicians such as Nat King Cole and Lena Horne and appeared in various films, including "Carmen Jones" and "Island in the Sun."
Apart from his work in the entertainment industry, Harry Belafonte became involved in civil rights activism, collaborating with Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders in the movement. He used his platform to speak out against racism and injustice and became one of the most prominent Black activists of his time.
Harry Belafonte's activism extended beyond American borders, and he was an outspoken critic of apartheid in South Africa. He used his influence to advocate for the release of Nelson Mandela from prison and was instrumental in organizing humanitarian efforts, such as the 1985 recording of the song "We Are the World" to raise funds and awareness for famine relief in Ethiopia.
Harry Belafonte had many great contributions to American culture and society cannot be understated. He used his art as a vehicle for social change and continues to be a leading voice for civil rights and humanitarian causes.
