They helped them feel like actual human beings that viewers would want to keep coming back to visit. Gunsmoke’s adaptability and family-friendly nature were two of its greatest strengths. It changed its opening in the 70s when gun violence was a major issue. It also hid references to and then changed Miss Kitty’s true career.
Fans also helped it last as long as it did. They’d write letters saying how much they loved the characters and even helped them Doc learn how to sound like a true doctor. Gunsmoke popularized the phrase “get out of Dodge.” It also ushered in an age of Westerns. The genre made up a large portion of classic TV shows.
