Frankie Lymon was born on the 30th of September, 1942, in Harlem, New York. He came from a musical family though his family came from relatively humble surroundings and couldn’t depend solely on music. But Frankie Lymon didn’t want the same fate. By the time he died, he was known as one of the foremost doo-wop singers of his generation.

Frankie Lymon fell in love with singing during his childhood and soon became part of a gospel group. This is where he honed his craft and he realized that this was to be his destiny. While he got his beginnings in the gospel, Frankie Lymon knew that he also had to find a way to break into the mainstream. Doo-wop was becoming more popular as a genre and this was the genre best suited for his singing style.
He became successful with his hit song “Why Do Fools Fall In Love?” which became his defining song and the one that he’s most known for. He’s also recorded other great songs such as “Little Bitty Pretty One” and “I Want You To Be My Girl.”
But behind his enormous and rather fast success, he had troubles in his personal life. He abuse drugs and had a set of troubled relationships with various women. In fact, his relationships with women would become a huge discussion point after his untimely death.
Frankie Lymon has had a fascinating life, yet his career and his legacy aren’t always discussed. He’s been largely overshadowed by many of his contemporaries and his short life has sadly been forgotten by many.
But he lived a rich life in his short 25 years. And not only was Frankie Lymon a great artist but he also had a rather interesting albeit strange life and one that’s worth looking back at.
