Did you know that Frank Sinatra allegedly had Marlon Brando kidnapped during the filming of Guys and Dolls, or did you think that the two were really great friends? When Marlon Brando was cast as the lead role of Sky Masterson in the 1955 Hollywood adaption of the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls, many in the entertainment industry were taken by surprise. Marlon had no experience in musicals, having just recently risen to prominence as a volatile and moody method actor. One of the people that were surprised that Marlon got the lead was Frank Sinatra, who had campaigned for the role himself. Instead, Frank was given the part of second lead Nathan Detroit. This was the second time Frank had lost a role to the younger actor, having previously lost out on the lead role in On the Waterfront.

While Guys and Dolls were filming, Marlon Brando won an Academy Award for his performance in On the Waterfront. While Marlon had no problem with Frank Sinatra, Frank found himself incredibly jealous of the younger star. When Marlon asked Frank for some help practicing musical numbers, Frank turned his back on Marlon. This kicked off an on-set feud that eventually resulted in Marlon being kidnapped and having his life threatened.
Though Marlon didn’t have much problem with Frank at the start of Guys and Dolls’ filming, he eventually grew to hate the legendary crooner as much as the legendary crooner hated him. Things finally came to a head between the two when Ava Gardner, who was Frank’s wife at the time, began showing romantic interest in Marlon.
