Some sitcom actors and actresses take the role of “star” a bit too literally. Tina Louise tried to get her character mentioned first in the famous Gilligan’s Island theme song. Others insist on total and complete control of their character. This was true of Caroll O’Connor who played Archie Bunker on All in the Family. He rewrote the entire pilot and threatened to leave if the changes weren’t accepted.
Rumors and overheard comments can also tear sitcom costars apart. William Frawley of I Love Lucy fame was so hurt when Vivian Vance referred to him as “that old man” that he wanted to return the favor by insulting her character in the show. Maureen McCormick brought her feud with Eve Plumb to a head when she claimed they had a romantic relationship.
Some costars don’t get along from day one. Bea Arthur was one of the few people in Hollywood who didn’t mesh with the late Betty White. Sitcom stars may even be instrumental in getting each other taken off of the show. Will Smith never got along with Janet Hubert and encouraged the showrunners to replace her with a new Aunt Viv. Most of the shows were able to overcome these feuds, but some never did. Suzanne Sommers was forced to leave Three’s Company over money disputes, and the show didn’t last long after that.
